Ce tableau<br>dont la composition, d\u2019une sobri\u00e9t\u00e9 exemplaire, \u00e0 la palette de<br>tons tr\u00e8s restreinte, attire le regard du spectateur vers le bijou,<br>perle appendue dans l\u2019ombre, \u00e0 l\u2019oreille de la jeune fille, et d\u00e9-<br>tourne de l\u2019objet secret de son auteur, dans un d\u00e9placement<br>subtil de la bouche vers l\u2019oreille.<br>Nous observerons ici le renversement d\u2019une agressivit\u00e9 avide<br>\u00e0 une qui\u00e9tude sereine. Nous comparerons ce tableau \u00e0 celui de<br>La laiti\u00e8re (1660) dont la lumi\u00e8re contraste avec le fond sombre<br>et uniforme de La jeune fille \u00e0 la perle. Les m\u00eames teintes se<br>retrouvent, et la blancheur laiteuse de la perle ferait \u00e9cho au<br>filet de lait coulant du pot tenu par la laiti\u00e8re.<br>Les femmes sont au centre de l\u2019\u0153uvre de Vermeer. Sous la<br>tranquillit\u00e9 apparente de ces sc\u00e8nes intimistes, les rideaux et<br>tapis seraient autant de voiles \u00e0 la curiosit\u00e9 avide et au d\u00e9sir<br>transgressif de la chose que Vermeer, sous les traits du peintre,<br>du g\u00e9ographe ou de l\u2019astronome, n\u2019a de cesse d\u2019explorer et de<br>d\u00e9couvrir. L\u2019entremetteuse (1656) \u00e9carte le voile sur les plaisirs clandestins et interdits o\u00f9 la main gauche de l\u2019homme est<br>pos\u00e9e sur le sein de la jeune prostitu\u00e9e pendant que l\u2019autre main<br>monnaye l\u2019\u00e9change d\u2019une pi\u00e8ce d\u2019or, sous le regard du peintre,<br>mis en sc\u00e8ne dans le tableau, se faisant complice de celui qui<br>regarde.<br>Vermeer a choisi ce regard en coin pour la Jeune fille \u00e0 la<br>perle.
