En 1792, une grave maladie va bouleverser et sa vie et son \u0153uvre. Hallucinations, angoisses, \u00eatres fabuleux hantent ses nuits. Ses cauchemars se peuplent d&rsquo;obsessions que tenteront d&rsquo;exorciser ses eaux-fortes, comme dans <em>Les caprices, <\/em>ou une violence extr\u00eame dans <em>Les d\u00e9sastres de la guerre; <\/em>violence du sujet surtout.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u00ab N\u00e9 avec un temp\u00e9rament ardent et actif, (&#8230;] Il m&rsquo;a \u00e9t\u00e9 d\u00e9ni\u00e9 de trouver un soulagement dans la soci\u00e9t\u00e9 de mes pareils [&#8230;] De telles exp\u00e9riences me portaient au bord du d\u00e9sespoir. Ce n&rsquo;est que l&rsquo; Art, !&rsquo;Art seul qui a retenu ma main. [&#8230; ] \u00bb<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Certaines peintures portent au paroxysme une cruaut\u00e9 exacerb\u00e9e, comme <em>Saturne<\/em><em> <\/em><em>d<\/em><em>\u00e9<\/em><em>vorant<\/em><em> <\/em><em>un<\/em><em> <\/em><em>de<\/em><em> <\/em><em>ses<\/em><em> <\/em><em>fils, <\/em>ou <em>Deux<\/em><em> <\/em><em>vieillards<\/em><em> <\/em><em>mangeant de la soupe,<\/em><em> <\/em>par exemple. Et notamment par leur traitement pictural, ces \u0153uvres, compos\u00e9es de taches fi\u00e9vreusement bross\u00e9es, atteignent une grande violence expressive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mais c&rsquo;est la gravure qui permet le mieux \u00e0 Goya d&rsquo;affirmer sa d\u00e9sesp\u00e9rance. Dans <em>La <\/em><em>tauromachie <\/em>(suite de 40 planches \u00e0 l&rsquo;eau forte), Goya s&rsquo;identifie \u00e0 la f\u00e9rocit\u00e9 tauromachique par l&rsquo;acte m\u00eame de graver.
