Ce pluriel d\u2019usage plut\u00f4t rare oblige \u00e0 constater qu\u2019il est des silences divers dans leur qualit\u00e9 comme dans leur nature. On s\u2019int\u00e9ressera ici aux multiples modulations du silence dans le v\u00e9cu des artistes et des po\u00e8tes : lourds et charg\u00e9s de pr\u00e9sages chez les uns (Edgar Poe, les symbolistes belges, Alban Berg), soudaines aphasies (Hugo von Hofmannsthal) ; silences l\u00e9gers et propices \u00e0 la m\u00e9ditation a\u00e9rienne chez d\u2019autres (Friedrich Nietzsche, Paul Val\u00e9ry). Simple affaire d\u2019acoustique ? Ces silences mobilisent pourtant d\u2019autres champs perceptifs, notamment ceux de la vue et de l\u2019espace. Constat qui invite St\u00e9phane Mallarm\u00e9 \u00e0 \u00e9baucher une th\u00e9orie du ph\u00e9nom\u00e8ne, \u00e0 \u00e9voquer un \u00ab significatif silence qu\u2019il n\u2019est pas moins beau de composer que les vers \u00bb : bien plus qu\u2019un simple intervalle dans un \u00e9nonc\u00e9, le silence se fait porteur de \u00ab signification \u00bb. C\u2019est l\u2019annonce d\u2019une r\u00e9volution esth\u00e9tique : pour toute une g\u00e9n\u00e9ration, le sens r\u00e9sidera d\u00e9sormais dans le n\u00e9gatif de la parole. Renversement des valeurs o\u00f9 l\u2019expression devient relative et c\u00e8de \u00e0 un silence majuscule : \u00ab \u00d4 mon Silence !&#8230; \u00bb, soupire Paul Val\u00e9ry. R\u00e9volution spirituelle : de perception des sens ext\u00e9rieurs qu\u2019il \u00e9tait, le silence devient, avec Paul Val\u00e9ry, exp\u00e9rience d\u2019un espace int\u00e9rieur.
