Gageons que cette formule concerne, en fait, le probl\u00e8me de la peinture lorsqu\u2019elle doit figurer l\u2019invisible avec du visible. Figuration \u00e0 laquelle concourt le motif pictural de la fen\u00eatre. La \u00ab fen\u00eatre-tableau \u00bb de Hopper donne une pr\u00e9sence singuli\u00e8re au regard du peintre, qui s\u2019attarde, \u00e9trangement, sur des sc\u00e8nes anodines, sans histoire ni int\u00e9r\u00eat apparent. Quel d\u00e9sir anime ce regard ? Ici interviennent les \u00ab fen\u00eatres-dans-le-tableau \u00bb. Gr\u00e2ce \u00e0 la relation \u00e0 la fois m\u00e9tonymique et m\u00e9taphorique qu\u2019elles \u00e9tablissent entre la maison et le corps humain, la personne humaine, elles signalent des \u00ab int\u00e9rieurs \u00bb, des lieux intimes qui renferment d\u2019autres intimit\u00e9s, des fors int\u00e9rieurs myst\u00e9rieux. Mais vides, peut-\u00eatre, \u2014 d\u00e9sesp\u00e9r\u00e9ment vides ? \u2014 Le th\u00e9\u00e2tre de l\u2019intime pourrait bien s\u2019av\u00e9rer atterrant. Reste que par les fen\u00eatres entrent le vent et la lumi\u00e8re, immat\u00e9riels comme les regards. Vent et lumi\u00e8re, ph\u00e9nom\u00e8nes physiques, mais parfois autre chose aussi, d\u2019un peu fantastique, voire surnaturel, et dont nul discours ne saurait rendre compte.
